Notes on why it's important for design researchers to teach how to design to industry and business.
Most companies sincerely believe their internal design processes are good.
But invariably, problems are found in companies of all sizes, and every company has its own unique set of process problems.
The real problem is that companies are so busy doing that they have little (if any) time to reflect on how they do it.
Product consultants can't help here. They can develop a new product for a client, but they client only gets the product – the client hasn't learned anything about how to make products.
The goal of a process consultant is to teach companies tools and methods that can let the company create it's own products. These tools and methods must be customized to the needs of each specific company – because every organization is different.
