Guiding Principles in my Research

Underlying any research activity are some principles that provide a philosophical foundation for the approach and framework adopted. Here are mine, in no particular order.

  • Only people can have knowledge; no computer in existence currently has knowledge. Knowledge-based systems of software are really just really fancy information systems.
  • Design, be it in engineering or elsewhere, has certain universal principles.
  • Life is multidisciplinary; your education should be too. Disciplinary silos in education, especially in practical disciplines like engineering, are an intellectual kiss of death.
  • Logic is the most under-valuated tool at the disposal of the designer and the design researcher.
  • Systems of logic can represent imperfect agents (like humans), and vaguely defined processes (like design).
  • Occam's Razor (roughly speaking, the simplest solution to a problem is the best solution).
  • Design can be studied scientifically, just as any other phenomenon.
